WORMS(DOGS)

Worms in dogs are common internal parasites that live primarily in a dog's intestines, heart, or lungs, causing symptoms ranging from mild nutrient deficiency to fatal organ failure. Many of these parasites are zoonotic, meaning they can easily transfer from your dog to infect humans, making routine control essential. [

The Five Main Types of Worms

Roundworms: Large, spaghetti-like worms that live in the small intestine. They are incredibly common in puppies, who often contract them from their mother before birth or through nursing.

Tapeworms: Flat, ribbon-like worms that attach to the intestinal wall. They are transmitted when dogs ingest adult fleas containing tapeworm larvae. You will often see rice-like segments crawling around your dog's anus or in their bedding.

Hookworms: Tiny, blood-sucking worms that anchor into the intestinal lining. They can cause severe, life-threatening anemia (blood loss) in young puppies. They are contracted through contaminated soil or when larvae burrow directly through the dog's paws.

Whipworms: Thread-like worms that reside in the large intestine. They cause severe inflammation, resulting in chronic watery or bloody diarrhoea and weight loss.

Heartworms: Thin, thread-like worms that live inside the heart and pulmonary arteries. Transmitted exclusively through mosquito bites, they cause progressive heart and lung damage and can be fatal if left untreated.

Clear Symptoms to Watch For

  • Physical Appearance: A classic "pot-bellied" look in puppies, a dull or dry coat, and progressive weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite.
  • Behavioral Signs: Scurrying or dragging their rear end across the floor (scooting) due to intense irritation from tapeworm segments.
  • Digestive Issues: Intermittent vomiting, watery diarrhea, or stools containing visible blood, mucus, or active worms.
  • Respiratory Issues: Persistent coughing, exercise intolerance, and heavy lethargy, which are primary indicators of an advanced Heartworm infection.

Diagnosis & Treatment

  1. Fecal Flotation Test: For intestinal worms, your veterinarian will analyze a fresh stool sample under a microscope to identify the specific microscopic worm eggs.
  2. Blood Testing: Heartworms cannot be found in stool; they require a specialized annual blood test to detect specific adult worm proteins.
  3. Prescription Dewormers: Treatment relies on targeted, veterinary-prescribed broad-spectrum medications (such as fenbendazole, pyrantel, or praziquantel).
  4. Heartworm Care: Active heartworm infections cannot be treated with standard dewormers. They require a strict, multi-month veterinary protocol involving deep muscle injections of specialized medication.

⚠️ Warning: Over-the-counter dewormers do not treat all types of worms. Giving the wrong medication can leave dangerous parasites untreated. Always consult your vet for an accurate diagnosis before administering medication.

To help me narrow down the best advice for your situation, could you tell me:

  • What is the age of your dog?
  • Have you noticed any specific signs like rice-like segments near their tail, a bloated belly, or coughing?
  • Is your dog currently on a monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventative?
