RABIES IN SMALL ANIMALS

Rabies is an acute, progressive viral encephalomyelitis caused by Lyssa viruses, affecting all warm-blooded mammals. While it uniformly attacks the central nervous system (CNS), the disease manifests with distinct epidemiological patterns, incubation timelines, and clinical presentations across different small domestic species like dogs, cats, sheep, and goats

Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100% fatal in all animals

While all mammals exhibit neurological decline, small animals generally split into "furious" (highly aggressive) or "dumb" (paralytic) classifications based on species

1. Dogs (Canine Rabies)

Dogs are the primary global vector for transmission to humans [1.1, 1.3]. Their clinical course is highly unpredictable and often fluctuates rapidly through three distinct phases

  • Prodromal Phase (1–3 days): Marked by abrupt behavioural shifts [1.2]. Friendly dogs become irritable or withdrawn, while aggressive dogs may become uncharacteristically affectionate.A subtle change in bark tone occurs due to early laryngeal muscle weakness.
  • Furious Phase (1–7 days): The dog becomes hyper-reactive to external stimuli (light, sound) and displays unprovoked aggression [1.2]. They may compulsively roam, bite inanimate objects, and show signs of anxiety or hallucinations
  • Paralytic Phase (2–4 days): Progresses to dropped jaw, heavy salivation (foaming), and progressive rear-limb weakness Death occurs via respiratory failure

 

2. Cats (Feline Rabies)

Cats are currently the most frequently reported domestic animal with rabies in North America due to frequent outdoor exposure to wildlife vectors.

  • Extreme Fury: Cats almost always exhibit the furious form of the disease.
  • Vicious Attacks: The prodromal phase is short (under 24 hours), rapidly escalating into unprovoked, frenzied scratching and biting at owners, other animals, or inanimate objects.
  • Rapid Collapse: Severe muscular tremors and incoordination quickly transition into generalized paralysis, with death typically occurring within 3 to 4 days of symptom onset.

 

3. Sheep and Goats (Ovine & Caprine Rabies)

Small ruminants are highly susceptible to rabies, usually contract it via bites from rabid wild carnivores (such as foxes or jackals), and overwhelmingly display the dumb/paralytic form.

  • Initial Mock Symptoms: Early signs are often mistaken for digestive issues, including bloat, vigorous head-butting, or straining to defecate.
  • Abnormal Oestrus Behaviour: Ewes and goats may display intense, continuous oestrus-like  behaviour, constant bleating, and hyper sexuality
  • Neurological Breakdown: Rapidly shifts to salivation, blindness, muscle tremors, and sudden falling. They rarely exhibit the aggressive biting seen in carnivores, though they may aggressively nudge or butt handlers before becoming completely paralysed and dying within 3 to 5 days.

 

 

 

Pathogenesis and Transmission Dynamics

The underlying mechanics of the virus remain consistent across all small domestic species

  • The Vector Pathway: Transmission occurs through salivary contamination of a bite wound, scratch, or open mucous membrane [1.1].
  • The Incubation Variable: The virus replicates locally in myocytes(muscle cells) for weeks or months [1.1]. The closer the bite is to the head, the shorter the incubation period.
  • The Axonal Ascent: The virus hitches a ride up the peripheral nerves via retrograde transport to the spinal cord and brain [1.1].
  • The Salivary Shedding: Once in the brain, it spreads outwards to other tissues, highly concentrating in the salivary glands just before or concurrent with the onset of clinical symptoms, enabling further transmission
