Typhoid And Paratyphoid In Small Animals
In veterinary medicine, true typhoid and paratyphoid fevers (caused strictly by human-restricted Salmonella enterica serovars like Typhi and Paratyphi) do not naturally infect small companion animals like dogs and cats. Instead, clinical disease in small animals linked to these terms is actually a severe systemic or enteric form of Salmonellosis in Animals caused by non-host-adapted or broad-host-range Salmonella serotypes (most commonly Salmonella typhimurium). (Note: Sometimes pet owners colloquially or mistakenly refer to severe canine viral gastroenteritis like parvovirus as "dog typhoid", but biologically they are unrelated).
Causes and Transmission
- The Pathogens: Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria belonging to the genus Salmonella. While human typhoid is exclusive to people, small animals contract generalist or mammalian strains—frequently via Salmonellosis.
- Dietary Risk Factors: Infection in dogs and cats has risen due to the commercial and homemade trend of feeding raw meat diets or unpasteurized products, which often culture positive for Salmonella.
- Environmental Exposure: Ingestion of contaminated water, scavenging dead wildlife, hunting rodents, or contact with contaminated commercial pet treats (like dried pig ears).
- The Carrier State: Many healthy dogs and cats act as asymptomatic "silent carriers," shedding bacteria intermittently in their feces without showing active signs of illness.
Clinical Presentation (Syndromes)
When clinical illness does manifest—typically in very young puppies/kittens or immunocompromised/stressed adults—it usually appears in one of two major forms:
- Septicemic Form (Systemic/Typhoid-like):
- High, acute fever (40.5–41.5°C / 105–107°F)
- Severe listlessness, profound depression, and prostration
- Rapid systemic collapse and potential mortality within 24 to 48 hours if untreated []
- Acute or Chronic Enteric Form:
- Vomiting and acute, foul-smelling diarrhea containing mucus or blood
- Abdominal pain, dehydration, rapid weight loss, and anorexia
- Potential for secondary complications such as pneumonia or abortion in pregnant animals []
Diagnosis and Treatment
- Diagnostic Confirmation: Vets rely on repeated fecal cultures or isolating the organism from blood or tissue samples, often utilizing specialized enrichment media.
- Supportive Care: Aggressive fluid therapy to combat severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances is the cornerstone of emergency management.
- Antimicrobial Controversy: The use of antibiotics is controversial in asymptomatic shedders or mild cases because it can prolong the shedding period or foster drug-resistant strains; however, they are mandatory for systemic/septicemic infections based on susceptibility testing.
