Understanding Upper Respiratory Infections in Cats

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTIs) are among the most common illnesses in cats, particularly kittens and cats living in multi-cat environments. These infections are usually viral in origin, with feline herpesvirus and calicivirus being the most frequent causes. Stress, overcrowding, and poor immunity significantly increase susceptibility.

Clinical Signs and Diagnosis

Affected cats commonly show sneezing, nasal discharge, watery or inflamed eyes, fever, and reduced appetite. In more severe cases, ulcers may develop in the mouth or on the tongue. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, supported by history and response to treatment, while laboratory testing may be used in chronic or severe cases.

Veterinary Treatment and Preventive Care

Treatment focuses on supportive care, including hydration, nutritional support, steam inhalation, and management of secondary bacterial infections when necessary. Vaccination, stress reduction, proper hygiene, and isolation of infected cats are critical preventive measures to control disease spread.
